New slaves took a long time to become used to plantation life and many failed to survive long enough to become used to their new living conditions and climate. Let us travel back in time, back to the late 1800s. Gone were the brutalities and indignities of slave life, the whippings and sexual assaults, the selling and forcible relocation of family members, the denial of education, wages, legal marriage, homeownership, and more. For newly freed african american slaves, life didn't change overnight.
